Gotu kola, regarded in China as one of the “miracle elixirs of life” has also been an important part of Ayurvedic medicine as a tool for increasing psychic sensitivity and rejuvenating the spirit. It is believed to heighten mental faculties, and strengthen the immune system. Gotu kola increases the synthesis of GABA from Glutamate, changing the over-all function of the body to a more peaceful state of mind.
Happiness tree bark is one of the finest herbs for relaxation, stress reduction, or social occasions. Happiness Tree, also called Albizia, has activity at both the GABA(a) and 5HT1A receptors, eliciting a calming, social bonding, and mood improving effect.
Holy basil is one of the most highly revered herbs in India and Ayurveda, a true adaptogen, balancing the physical workings of the body in a health promoting manner while reducing stress and healing the temple that is our body. Holy basil reduces cortisol and is a vital ally for stress sensitive individuals.
Lavender is a well known medicinal herb and spice, producing a distinctive smell and flavor. Lavender is very proficient at improving the mood & reducing anxiety, and is effective at settling the stomach, as a circulatory tonic, and as a general purpose nervine sedative.
Lemon balm is a citrus scented botanical that has a traditional use as a mental tonic, claimed to lift the spirit and abolish melancholy. Modern research shows this sweet tasting specimen to influence GABA receptors by inhibiting the metabolism of the calming neurotransmitter.
Lemongrass is a sweet tasting herb very much entwined with Thai cuisine that imparts a strong citrus-like aroma and possesses potent muscle-relaxing, anti-inflammatory effects in part mediated by the endo-cannabinoid receptors.
Skullcap is a well known herbal sedative belonging to the Lamiaceae, or Mint family of plants. Skullcap has traditionally been used to relieve muscle cramps, ease one into sleep, and to reduce anxiety. Skullcap has a synergistic effect with GABAergics, effectively reducing worries and fears, helping the mind relax and allowing one to focus on what is really important.
Wood betony is a a popular older herbal sedative, hailed as a remedy for migraines, anxiety, spasms, twitching, inflammation, stress, and worry. Wood betony works through mechanisms unique among most herbal sedatives, and is profoundly effective at relaxing tight muscles and easing a tense mind.
Lindera is a lesser known herb, but none the less profound in its actions, excelling as a digestive aid, bronchial stimulant, and detoxicant, with pain relieving and mood lifting secondary effects. Lindera contains isoquinoline alkaloids, which are linked to the production of endogenous (body created) opioids, also known as endorphins. The amounts are minuscule and not enough to elicit what most would consider an opioid effect, however these isoquinoline alkaloids may indeed be responsible in part for the mood lifting and pain relieving effects that Lindera is associated with.
Magnolia bark is the premier herb in the Traditional Chinese system of Medicine for reducing stress & anxiety while promoting the activities of the parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system. Magnolia has been shown to behave as a positive allosteric modulator of the benzodiazapine site which reduces the amount of GABA needed to activate the GABA(A) receptor. Magnolia also stimulates the barbiturate site of the GABA receptor while increasing the expression of the GABA(a) receptor, producing a long term therapeutic effect. Outside of the potent GABAergic effects, Magnolia is believed to reduce the secretion of adrenaline from the adrenal glands, antagonize NMDA receptors thus reducing seizure threshold, and enhance cholinergic neurotransmission, specifically of the muscarinic subtype, thus strengthening the parasympathetic nervous system.
Phellodendron is an incredibly useful herb for herbalists the world over, providing a mixed sedative & analgesic effect. The herb decreases stress hormones, increases GABA production, & elevates serotonin content. A constituent of phellodendron, berberine, has a documented mood lifting effect activated by the elusive Sigma-1 receptor.
Red sage is a pain relieving and blood dispersing herb of the Salvia or Mint family, traditionally used as a complimentary herb with Corydalis and others, as found in our Relief Tonic. Red sage is a mild pain killer on its own, but functions best when used as a part of a formula, where it improves the calming action of many of the herbs in this blend.
Ginger is a great tonic with a spicy taste, generally used for nausea but also functions as a potent anti-inflammatory agent with powerful blood circulating effects.
