Polygonum multiflorum, also known as Fo-ti and He Shou Wu, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine herb touted to improve youthfulness and longevity, feed the heart, and calm the soul, and was given its nickname he shou wu, which means “Mr. He’s Black Hair” after Mr. He, who revived his youth, hair, and sexual potency by taking Fo-ti tea. Fo-ti is traditionally cured with black bean sauce and wine.
Fo-ti root is a beneficial ally for nourishment and vitality, it has a mild phytoestrogenic effect which helps balance testosterone levels and keeps one feeling and looking young. Fo-ti has strong MAO-B (Monoamine oxidase B) inhibiting properties. MAO-B is what inactivates Dopamine, a vital neurotransmitter related to memory, focus, and learning. Youthfulness and low MAO-B levels have been linked and it is believed that by keeping MAO-B levels low one can preserve their youth and vigor. Is it any wonder, that the Chinese have regarded Fo-ti as the fountain of youth?
