Lion’s mane, also known as Hericium erinaceus or pom pom mushroom,  is an edible and medicinal mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group, native to North America, Europe, and Asia. Throughout its history, it has been used as both a food and a supplement. The mushroom is rich in polysaccharides, both those found in other mushrooms as well as those unique to Lion’s mane, these compounds in particular are believed to convey the neuroregenerative benefits of the mushroom.

The most notable properties of the mushroom are the enhancement of the Nerve Growth Factor, a driving causative marker for neural pathway development which has been linked to learning and the repair of damaged neural networks. In addition to this, Lion’s mane also shows promise in enhancing the formation of the myelin sheath, which functions as a protective lipid layer that forms around cells in the brain. Lion’s mane also showed a protective effect against amyloids, which are broken protein fragments highly associated with neurodegeneration.

Use
The recommended amount per dose is 500-2000 mg, or 1/4 – 1 tsp or 1-4 size ’00’ capsules. It can be mixed with food, water, or juice.

Precautions
Do not consume without knowing an accurate dosage. A milligram scale is highly recommended.
