Magnolia officinalis is the premier herb in the Traditional Chinese system of Medicine for reducing stress and anxiety while promoting the activities of the parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system.

Magnolia is one tool that no herbalist should be without. Most effective in times of stress or anxiety, Magnolia has been shown to behave as a positive allosteric modulator of the benzodiazepine site which reduces the amount of GABA needed to activate the GABA(A) receptor. Magnolia also increases the expression of the alpha GABA receptors and has barbiturate-type effects. Outside of the potent GABAergic effects, Magnolia may reduce the secretion of adrenaline from the adrenal glands, antagonize NMDA receptors thus reducing seizure threshold, and enhance cholinergic neurotransmission, specifically of the muscarinic subtype, strengthening the parasympathetic nervous system.

Use
Magnolia bark is an extremely powerful herb that synergizes with other anti-anxiety herbs, potentiating the effects upwards of 300% in some cases. 1 to 2 tsp can be added to tea and steeped in boiled water for 5 to 10 minutes. Complimentary herbs are Kukicha tea, Valerian root, Kava kava, Chamomile, and Happiness tree bark.
