The Sacred lotus, also known as Nelumbo nucifera and Indian lotus, is well-known and appreciated by the people of the East, intimately tied to spiritual beliefs and practices. The appraisal of this herb can be seen in Buddhism and Taoism, both for the unique character of the living flower, which lives as simultaneously an aquatic and above-water plant, and for its medicinal, spiritual, and pro-sexual effects as an herb. In Hindu and Buddhist religions, Sacred lotus flowers have long been revered, the belief being that this special flower may bring one prosperity, fertility, purity, and vitality.
The Sacred lotus has multiple actions, mainly of a relaxing sedative kind, but also has been reported use as an aphrodisiac, anti-addiction aid, and to offset the anxiety produced by stimulants. It has a very mystical quality when smoked in large amounts, seeming to both relax and engage one in their activities.
The Sacred lotus is one herb that no ethnobotanist can do without, having such a rich history and unique effects, it is one herb that can be used almost universally, working in harmony with stimulants and complimenting the effects of sedatives. Sacred lotus has been claimed to work as a relaxing aphrodisiac, working especially well for females, and even has been linked to lucid dreams and a manifestation of one’s dreams crossing over into reality.
