Sceletium tortuosum, also known as Kanna, is a succulent groundcover that produces showy white flowers with threadlike petals. Its fermented roots and leaves were chewed by the Khoekhoe tribe of South Africa. The plant contains mesembrine, though the pharmacology is not fully understood. The plant has been used by South African pastoralists and hunter-gatherers as a mood-altering substance from prehistoric times.
Kanna is a very remarkable plant with a number of different uses and offers much promise to the ever-evolving herbalist and to science as a whole.
Origin
Africa
Fermented
Wildharvested
Shredded/powdered
Constituents
mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, and tortuosamine
Use
Kanna is more stimulating when chewed and more relaxing when consumed. The recommended dosage is 200-500mg. Fermented Kanna is considered a stronger mood lifter, while unfermented Kanna is considered a stronger calmative. We highly recommend the fermented tea cut.
Kanna has been traditionally used by the indigenous peoples of Africa to elevate mood, lessen anxiety, provide a mild boost of energy, and relax the mind while heightening the sense of well-being. Kanna has been traditionally eaten, chewed, smoked, or made into tea.
Precautions
It is currently believed Kanna’s primary mechanism of action is as a non-selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, VMAT2 inhibitor, and PDE4 inhibitor. This means it is extremely harmful if ingested alongside amphetamine-based stimulant drugs, SSRIs, and MAOI prescription medications.
