Astragalus membranaceus is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for recovering health in times of need by strengthening the immune system and assisting the body in healing wounds and injuries. Astragalus is highly regarded as a tonic for stimulating metabolism and increasing energy levels, improving the functioning of the adrenal glands, lungs, and digestive system. Astragalus has been used in TCM formulations to regulate and normalize night sweats caused by weak Qi.
Astragalus makes an excellent adaptogen for helping the body rebuild energy and recover from times of sickness. It effectively improves how energy is taken in from oxygen and food while greatly enhancing the immune system. Astragalus improves breathing, adrenal function, and the gastrointestinal tract, increases metabolism, reduces fatigue, promotes healing, and improves the immune system.
Astragalus may extend lifespan by activating telomerase, extending the lengths of the shortest telomeres which protect the terminal DNA at the ends of all chromosomes. Astragalus may also promote a longer life by protecting mitochondria through the scavenging of reactive oxygen species and increasing the activity of antioxidases.
Astragalus has also shown various levels of activity as a vasodilator, cardiac tonic, cholesterol-reducing agent, insulin sensitivity enhancer, immune system balancer, stimulant of growth hormones specifically IGF-1, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and kidney protective herb.
